19-0397-00 Indian River Water Main and Force Main Project
This approximately $1 million project consisted of the installation of approximately 5,500 feet of 8-inch water main and 9,200 feet of 2- to 6-inch force main in the Indian River Drive area of Jensen Beach, Florida. The existing water main was 30 – 40 years old and was constructed of cast iron. The force main consisted primarily of cast iron pipes that ranged in size from 2 inches to 6 inches. Both the water main and force main were undersized for the amount of traffic in the neighborhood. Force main is a type of piping that brings water from the main line to individual buildings (as opposed to a sprinkler system) or to another part of the main line.
Individually hand-assembling each portion of pipe provided robust joints that hold up well under pressure, especially when compared to welded joints that are formed using automated equipment on assembly lines.
